Boat wake effects on sediment transport in intertidal waterways

چکیده

Boat traffic and resulting wakes are among the major human-mediated stressors on coastal ecosystems. Modulation of sediment transport by tides in an intertidal waterway with boat is studied here. The hypothesis that cause significant increases settings tested. Field observations tides, currents, turbidity were collected a transect within Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Northeast Florida, USA. Hydrodynamic processes evaluated analyzing this field data set. A daily average 60 wake events varying energies identified using time-frequency analysis methods. Due to differences suspension response each unpredictable evolution bed state, decomposition effects individual not possible. Therefore, dynamics during periods activity compared their entirety inactivity. Throughout experiment, all had consistently greater suspended concentration near preceding succeeding In first eight days experiment where tidal forcing was relatively similar between inactivity periods, rates estimated as 0.048 m3/m/hr 0.043 inactivity, respectively, indicating 12% increase due traffic. larger occurred over last three experiment. Volumes transported low-tide, mid-tide high-tide than counterparts results confirm earlier mentioned hypothesis.

Sediment Transport in Unsteady Flow Conditions

Sediment transport under unsteady flow condition is studied experimentally. In the first step, sediment transport under different steady flow conditions was measured and an empirical equation was derived for its calculation. In the next step, two continuous and three stepwise hydrographs were generated in the flume, and their sediment transport rate was measured. The continuous hydrographs were...

Predation and sediment disturbance effects of the intertidal polychaete Nereis virens (Sars) on associated meiofaunal assemblages

A microcosm experiment was carried out to determine the effects of the activity of the burrowing polychaete Nereis virens (Sars) on the associated meiofauna. The sediment basin (76 3 41 cm) was filled with 10 cm of sandy sediment previously sieved with a 1-mm mesh to remove any undesired macrofauna and macrodetritus. Fifteen 13-cm long polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) tubes (I.D. 5 10 cm) were pushed i...

Grain size distribution effects on phosphate sorption by fluvial sediment: implications for modelling sediment- phosphate transport

A sensitivity analysis was performed on a sediment-phosphate transport model by determining the phosphate sorption characteristics of separated size fractions and prepared size distributions of fine-grained ( < 64 jum) river sediment typically transported in two southern Ontario streams. The Langmuir equation was used to quantify phosphate release from the sediment. Results of the study indicat...

Modelling of Sediment Transport in Beris Fishery Port

In this paper, the large amount of sedimentation and the resultant shoreline advancements at the breakwaters of Beris Fishery Port are studied. A series of numerical modeling of waves, sediment transport, and shoreline changes were conducted to predict the complicated equilibrium shoreline. The outputs show that the nearshore directions of wave components are not perpendicular to the coast whic...
